Following the successful completion of the Healing Hearts Appeal the Pinpoint Cancer Appeal was launched in 2005. The Appeal raised over £480,000 for a revolutionary image guided radiotherapy system.
The new equipment scans cancer patients during their treatment providing superior images to those from a CT scan. This enables the radiographer to ensure that none of the tumour has been missed and eliminates the need to radiate a larger area, which would damage healthy tissue.
The appeal was completed in March 2007 enabling Southend University Hospital to be only the seventh in the country to have this innovative equipment. As a result, more than 500 patients each year will have less damage from their radiotherapy and cure rates will be higher.
